Audiovisual Department

The Audiovisual Department originates from the Sound Archives' collections; it houses and provides access to the collections of sound, video and multimedia (software programs, video games...) documents on any type of medium. These documents were acquired by the BnF, donated to the BnF or added to the collections through legal deposit. Today, the collection includes about 1 500 000 documents. Works and magazines connected to these fields as well as specific archives collections are also available.The Department holds a unique collection of 1,300 recording and reading devices of sound, video and multimedia documents.

Reading rooms

Two possibilities are proposed to readers wishing to use the reading rooms.

  • The Reference Library (Haut-de-Jardin level) is open to anyone 16 years of age and over; this library makes encyclopaedic collections available in free access.
  • Entrance to the Research Library (Rez-de-Jardin level) is limited to accredited users; at this level, the readers have the possibility to consult the heritage collections.

In the Reference Library, the audiovisual documents can be consulted in all the reading rooms. Among other services, readers can find in the reading room of the Audiovisual Department (room A):

  • Regular video broadcastings on a wide plasma screen
  • A digital creation studio (sound, video, multimedia) (by prior appointment)
  • Video games

At the Rez-de-jardin level, the audiovisual documents of the Research Library are available only in room P.

In this room, readers can also use the collections of the Inathèque de France (legal deposit of radio and television) and the digitized collections of the Centre National de la Cinématographie (CNC) - Archives françaises du film.
