In 1979, the Maison Jean Vilar opens in a 18th century private mansion, the Hôtel Crochans, located in the heart of Avignon. Governed by a four-power agreement between Avignon city, the Jean Vilar Association, the Bibliothèque nationale de France and the Ministry of Culture and Communication, it houses the Jean Vilar collection, property of the Association.
It provides access to a library connected to the BnF’s Performing Arts Department and more particularly dedicated to the Avignon Festival and cultural life in the region.
The four partners highlight the Maison’s collections and pay tribute to Jean Vilar by organizing permanent and temporary exhibitions and numerous cultural events.
