Collections and services

Containing almost 600,000 coins and medals, BnF’s numismatics collections provide a complete overview of the history of money, from its invention in Lydia in the early 7th century B.C. to the present day.

The Library’s collections of tokens include around 22,000 tokens, ranging from the Middle Ages to the present day.

Three quarters of these are French tokens, split into three periods: the Middle Ages, the early modern period, and the Revolution and the 19th century. In particular, tokens from the Ancien Régime include very rare gold and silver tokens from the former royal collections.

The best represented foreign coins are those from the former Spanish and Austrian Netherlands.
