The database of bookbindings
This database provides access to one of the most important collections of bookbindings worldwide, especially in the French domain.
It gathers a selection of French digitised bookbindings throughout the history of this art. Research can be carried out into the following subjects:
- characteristics of bookbindings: typology, ornaments, structure;
- bookbinding workshops and binders;
A bibliography, a glossary and a file dedicated to major online resources available in the field have been added to the database.
In April 2013, the description of about 200 bookbindings housed at the Rare Book Reserve was available via . The most symbolic treasures of this collection can be found in the database: bindings with large ornaments dating back to the reign of Henry II, King of France (1547-1559), bindings for the French bibliophiles Jean Grolier (towards 1489-1565) and Thomas Mahieu (towards 1520 - after 1588), 18th century mosaic bindings…
In the fall 2013, the database should contain about 1 000 bindings.
