Paul Jacoulet

from July 5, 2011 to September 4, 2011 François-Mitterrand / Donors’ gallery

An engraver (166 engraved woodcuts) and artist (over 3 000 watercolours and drawings), Paul Jacoulet spent his life in Japan. Born into a very cultured family circle and knowing much about Western art, he learnt about wood engraving traditional techniques with Japanese masters. His work is the perfect synthesis of both worlds and oscillates between art, illustration and ethnology. This exhibition will be an opportunity for French visitors to discover his lovely and coloured portraits of Pacific island populations.
