Zellidja - Travel journals

from May 17, 2013 to August 3, 2013 François-Mitterrand / Donors’ gallery

Jean Walter, a French architect and great traveller, created the Zellidja grants in 1939. This term was inspired by the mines Jean Walter owned in Morocco. A philanthropist, he enabled young people aged 16 to 20 to develop a solo travel project funded by a grant.
In the patron’s mind, the idea was to promote some sort of initiation to life through the discovery of foreign places and meetings with other people; a way for the winner’s talent to reveal itself.
Several thousands of travel reports produced over six decades have been donated to the department of Maps and Plans; they compose a collection of unique accounts made by young people discovering the world.
