Initial, Philippe IV venerating a relic of Saint Louis at the Sainte-Chapelle

  • A testimony of the Kings of France’s daily life
The prayer book of Saint-Louis of Poissy was made for the King Philip IV to honor his grandfather, King Louis IX, canonized in 1297. Made between 1310 and 1315, Philip IV gave it as a gift to his cousin, Marie of Clermont-Bourbon, also granddaughter of Saint Louis.
  • A unique religious handbook
While promoting the cult of Saint Louis, this prayer book includes an ensemble of religious texts used to recite prayers. Therefore it was surely used by Marie of Clermont-Bourbon, nun at the priory Saint-Louis of Poissy.
  • An historical artwork
This prayer book presents unique illuminations, one of which being the oldest representation of the Relics of the Passion protected in the Sainte Chapelle, a masterpiece of Flamboyant Gothic architecture built by Saint Louis in the heart of Paris.
It is also rich of stylistic and iconographic innovations and presents the oldest iconographic cycle about the life of Saint Louis. It is therefore a testimony of the beginning of the worship to his person.
  • A masterpiece of French Illumination
Made by the illuminator Richard of Verdun, it is a capital masterpiece to understand French History of Art. This prayer book is actually the missing link between two major works of the medieval French Illumination: the prayer book of the King Philip IV, illuminated by Master Honoré at the end of the 13th century, and the Belleville’s prayer book, made by Jean Pucelle, around 1323-1326.
