Designing an information system always involves a modeling phase. Modeling consists of building an artificial abstract view of reality so as to better understand reality in the context of a given aim.
When building databases, modeling is a means of ensuring that everyone is talking about the same things and considering the same methods of solving the same problems. It also enables the networking of heterogeneous databases by mapping not from format to format, but between the format used by each database and a common conceptual model.
