Preservation: expertise and services

The National library of France offers preservation services related to its production activities to external institutions, libraries and archives.

For restoration, disinfection, deacidification and analysis services, the transportation, documents insurance and travel expenses are to be borne by the applicant.

Consulting and expertise: physicochemical and biological analyses

The main role of the National library of France scientific and technical laboratory is to provide assistance and advice to staff responsible for preserving collections – curators and restorers belonging to BnF and agreed partner libraries – as well as to respond to requests from other institutions.

Current hourly rate: €60 + VAT
(Includes labor and supplies; all services are subject to quotation at the applicable VAT rate as at the invoice date, and include the production of an analysis report).

Chemical and physical analysis

  • Advice, analysis and quality control on materials forming part of packaging and equipment used for document preservation and storage
  • Advice and analysis of collections components
  • Environmental checks

Microbiological analysis

  • Expert sanitary analysis of collections
  • Identification of mold and insects
  • Curative treatment (disinfection)
  • Advice for implementating of preventive measures
  • Environmental checks
