Informations générales

Au sein de la Maison Jean-Vilar, la bibliothèque, gérée par le département des Arts du spectacle de la BnF, propose plus de 39 000 livres et revues en arts du spectacle, ainsi que des archives et la documentation portant sur les festivals et le spectacle vivant à Avignon. Elle accueille gratuitement tous les publics - chercheurs, étudiants, professionnels, amateurs - et développe des partenariats locaux avec des structures d’enseignement et de formation.
Tout au long de l’année et particulièrement pendant le Festival d’Avignon, la Maison Jean-Vilar organise également des expositions, lectures, conférences et rencontres.

  • En juillet, pendant le Festival d’Avignon, la bibliothèque est ouverte tous les jours de 11 h à 19 h.
  • La Maison Jean-Vilar est fermée les jours fériés*
  • Fermeture annuelle au mois d’août et entre Noël et le jour de l’An.
* 1er janvier, dimanche et lundi de Pâques, 1er et 8 mai, jeudi de l’Ascension, dimanche et lundi de Pentecôte, 15 août, 1er et 11 novembre et 25 décembre.

Research Library

Rattachée au département des Arts du spectacle, l’antenne avignonnaise de la BnF a pour mission de collecter, conserver et valoriser la mémoire du Festival d’Avignon, du OFF, des Hivernales et des lieux de spectacles en Avignon : archives, programmes, dossiers de presse, affiches, photographies, vidéos. Elle propose en outre une importante bibliothèque spécialisée en arts du spectacle, gratuite et ouverte à tous. Dans ses deux salles de lecture de 40 places au total, elle accueille gratuitement tous les publics - chercheurs, étudiants, professionnels, amateurs.

21,000 books free of access

  • 4,000 books on performing arts: theater, dance, opera, cinema, circus, clowns, marionettes, mime artists, street theater etc. in the main room
  • 17,000 texts from the classic and contemporary drama repertoire in the adjacent room 
  • About 100 general books on culture and cultural decentralization

  • Albums featuring 10,000 photographies of the shows presented at the Festival d’Avignon by year (1972-2013)
  • A selection of books on Jean Vilar, the TNP and the Festival d’Avignon as well as programs of the Festival d’Avignon and of the Festival OFF

The records of each archive collection contain a short historical presentation as well as indications on how to conserve them. 
For some archive collections, internal inventories on paper can be consulted on site.
